Getting Ready for Fall: How to Wash Comforters, Blankets & Heavy Bedding

Whichever bin, closet shelf, or garage tote they've been living in since spring, they need a wash before they go back on the bed. Dust, stored-fabric odor, and whatever settled on them over the summer don't air out on their own.

That's where fall laundry gets complicated. Comforters, duvets, and heavy blankets don't fit in a standard washer — and even if yours technically fits one in, a top-loader can't rinse a queen or king comforter clean. Why Comforters Need More Than a Home Washer

Most in-unit and apartment washers are built for clothes, not bedding. A queen or king comforter needs room to move freely in the drum to rinse out completely — cram it into a machine that's too small and you get soap trapped in the fill, a musty smell that doesn't go away, and a comforter that's still damp in the middle after a full dry cycle.

What It Costs to Have Us Handle It

Comforters and duvets are priced flat, by size, so there's no guessing or per-pound math for bulky items:

Compare that to the laundromat route: an industrial machine large enough for a king comforter typically runs $6–$8 to wash, another $4–$6 to dry, plus the trip itself — 45 minutes to an hour once you count driving, waiting on the cycle, and folding it in the lobby. The flat rate covers the wash, the dry, and it comes back to your door already folded.

How It Works With Your Regular Order

You don't need to schedule a separate trip just for bedding. Add comforters, throw blankets, and pillows to any regular pickup and delivery order:

• Bag it separately if you can — a comforter takes up a full bag on its own, so keeping it apart from your wash & fold bag makes sorting faster
• Note it when you schedule — add "comforter" or "heavy blanket" to your pickup notes so we know to expect it
• Flag anything delicate — down-fill, wool, or dry-clean-only bedding should be noted so it's handled separately from the wash & fold machines
• Same pickup window, same driver — there's no separate bulky-item schedule; it comes and goes with everything else

Turnaround on comforters typically runs the same ~48 hours as a standard wash & fold order, longer bulky items included. If you're racing an incoming cold snap, mention the timing in your pickup notes and we'll do what we can to prioritize it.

Fall Laundry Questions We Hear Most

Can I mix a comforter in with my regular wash & fold bag?

You can, but it's better not to — a queen or king comforter fills most of a standard laundry bag on its own, so combining it with clothes usually means two bags anyway. Just leave both out together at pickup and note that one bag is bedding.

What about down or wool bedding?

Add a note when you schedule. Down-fill comforters and wool blankets need different water temperature and drying handling than a synthetic-fill comforter, and we'll route them accordingly.

Do you handle mattress pads, blackout curtains, or rugs too?

Mattress pads and curtains generally go through the same process as a comforter — note the item and size when you book. Rugs and heavily soiled or oversized household items are best confirmed with us directly before scheduling, since sizing varies a lot more than bedding does.

Is there a minimum for a comforter-only order?

Wash & fold has a $40 per-pickup minimum, but comforters, pillows, and other flat-rate household items aren't subject to that minimum — a single comforter can be its own order if that's all you need cleaned.
